Presidents Report

Hello again! Summer is officially upon us with temperatures rising and grass growing! The local pheasants should have had a favorable spring nesting season so far with no major rain and flooding events. If you haven’t already seen some, keep your eyes out for broods of young pheasant chicks sneaking into the long grass of the ditches about this time of year. This in turn brings attention to please take this as a friendly reminder to please avoid mowing ditch grass until later in the summer to help protect the young pheasants.

Congratulations to the local high school trap teams who just took part in the Minnesota State High School Trap Shooting Championships recently in Alexandria, MN recently.  Our area was represented well and had some outstanding results.  We are encouraged by the number of youths involved in these teams and hope that they can use it as a path to participating in and volunteering with organizations like ours for the rest of their lives!

A quick heads up that the MN Youth Outdoor Day is scheduled for July 19th at the Nicollet Conservation Club.  We’ve been a part of this event the past few years and look forward to having a shooting stand there again this year.  See the link below for details and sign up.

Have a great summer!

Habitat Report
This is a reminder to not mow road ditches until after August 1st to give the small birds enough time to grow and escape the mowers.
An additional reminder is during nesting season you cannot run your dogs on public WMAs from April 16 to July 14th (See MN Hunting Regulations).

USDA to Open General and Continuous Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) Enrollment for 2025

Are there areas of your fields that are environmentally sensitive or provide issues? These areas you may want to consider enrolling in CRP which could help both the condition of the land and your farm profitability. Land that is not currently enrolled in CRP or expiring CRP may be offered for enrollment during Continuous CRP signup period. The first batching period ended on June 6, 2025, but continue to submit offers for Continuous CRP for potential future batching periods through July 31, 2025.

General CRP

Agricultural producers and landowners submit offers for General CRP through a competitive bid process. Offers are ranked and scored, by FSA, using nationally established environmental benefits criteria. USDA will announce accepted offers once ranking and scoring for all offers is completed. In addition to annual rental payments, approved General CRP participants may also be eligible for cost-share assistance to establish long-term, resource-conserving vegetative cover.

Continuous CRP

Unlike General CRP, Continuous CRP offers are not subject to a competitive bid process. To ensure enrolled acres do not exceed the current statutory cap of 27 million acres, FSA is accepting Continuous CRP offers on a first-come, first-served basis through June 6. However, should allotted CRP acreage remain available following the June 6 deadline, FSA will accept continuous CRP offers from interested landowners through July 31, 2025, and may be subsequently considered for acceptance, in batches, if it’s determined that the offered acres support USDA’s conservation priorities.

Continuous CRP participants voluntarily offer environmentally sensitive lands, typically smaller parcels than offered through General CRP including wetlands, riparian buffers, and varying wildlife habitats. In return, they receive annual rental payments and cost-share assistance to establish long-term, resource-conserving vegetative cover.

Continuous CRP enrollment options:

  • State Acres for Wildlife Enhancement Initiative: Restores vital habitat in order to meet high-priority state wildlife conservation goals.
  • Highly Erodible Land Initiative: Producers and landowners can enroll in CRP to establish long-term cover on highly erodible cropland that has a weighted erodibility index greater than or equal to 20.
  • Clean Lakes, Estuaries and Rivers (CLEAR) Initiative: Prioritizes water quality practices on the land that, if enrolled, will help reduce sediment loadings, nutrient loadings, and harmful algal blooms. The vegetative covers also contribute to increased wildlife populations.
  • CLEAR30 (a component of the CLEAR Initiative): Offers additional incentives for water quality practice adoption and can be accessed in 30-year contracts.
  • Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP): Addresses high priority conservation objectives of states and Tribal governments on agricultural lands in specific geographic areas.

Grassland and Expiring CRP Acres

FSA will announce dates for Grassland CRP signup in the near future.

Additionally, landowners with acres enrolled in CRP set to expire Sept. 30, 2025, can offer acres for re-enrollment beginning today. A producer can offer to enroll new acres into CRP and offer to re-enroll any acres expiring Sept. 30, 2025.

For more information on CRP participant and land eligibility, approved conservation practices and detailed program fact sheets, visit FSA’s office or reach out to Reva – Brown County Pheasants Forever Land Biologist.
Adopt-a-WMA Program
We held the first 2025 Adopt-a-WMA habitat day on May 10th at the Bashaw WMA. We completed new signage, removed barbed-wire on the new 80-acre parcel of Bashaw WMA complex. This complex now has over 700 acres of public lands. In 2024 we added 80 acres of new land through acquisition to this complex.

We hope you will be able to join us in one of our future habitat days.
Land Acquisitions
BCPF has acquired a few new parcels over the last couple of years. One parcel being 80 acres which is part of the expanding Bashaw complex. During our habitat day we posted and removed barb wire fencing so this parcel will be open to the public.

Additionally, we had donated to us a 40-acre parcel which will be posted and added we hope open to the public this fall. Another 80+ acre parcel was acquired in March and again we hope will open to the public this fall. Stay posted for updates on these two parcels.

Membership
The monies we receive through donations, fund raising, and membership are critical to us enhancing or purchasing lands for all the public to enjoy. We encourage everyone to renew their membership to Pheasants Forever or upgrade to a Lifetime membership.

Pheasants Forever is the only national organization with a model of chapters keeping 100% of the funds they raise. While belonging to a larger national organization that has a voice on federal and state conservation policies, chapters are tasked with finding projects for their funds. Minnesota takes full advantage of this model using funds raised for projects locally as well as other areas in the state of Minnesota.
