BROWN COUNTY 2020 MEMBERSHIP DRIVE & UPDATES
November, 2020

We hope you are having a good fall and Pheasant hunting season with your friends & family during these trying times. We have been trying like many of you to deal with the Covid-19 situation in fund raising planning and for all of you who maintain your Pheasants Forever Membership, we are grateful. I want to wish all of you a safe fall and, – Thank You.

Membership Drive 2020 drawing which was held last week. And, the “winners” are:

Associate/Life/Sponsor Member Winners:

Jeffrey Nelson (Henry Golden Boy PF .22 gun)

Robert Hoffman (Shotgun – Winchester Super X Pump 12 ga. shotgun)

Youth Member Winners:

Jane Zajac (Henry Golden Boy PF .22 gun)

Tim Kral (Pointer Model 1000, over/under 20 ga. shotgun)

This year’s “Membership Drive & Family Fun Night” event had to be postponed. We are anticipating that we will more than likely be prohibited from having an event next spring as well. We need to commit in December one way or the other to such plans. Given we are close to that time period we are planning on a series of raffles to raise funds and drive membership for 2021.

  • To attract past and new “Pheasant Forever Membership(s)”.
  • To raise money for the chapter so that we can continue to acquire lands for public use.
  • Use proceeds to help the national R3 efforts. This includes support for local trap/shooting teams.

Currently, we will be holding at least two main fund-raising raffles. We are still determining if we will have other raffles or not. The two we are planning are:

  • “The Hunters Dream Raffle” and “The Hunters Choice Raffle”. The Hunter’s Dream Raffle will be for eight (8) different Browning guns, gun safe and a MN Lifetime Small Game License. Each ticket will be $25.00 and only 600 tickets will be sold. This is a winner takes all raffle (need not be present to win).
  • “The Hunter’s Choice Raffle” the winner will have the option to pick one (1) item from the Reed’s Banners. There are many prizes a winner may choose from. Each ticket will be $10.00. This raffle will have many winners (need not be present to win).

Tickets should be available in January 2021 from pheasants Forever Members. You can find key names and contacts on our web page at: http://www.browncountypf.org/officers/
or some of them are named below.

Prairies, wildlife, and public access are counting on conservation groups - and their dedicated members, chapters and supporters - in the years ahead, so we’re doing our best to stay the course for our habitat mission in the midst of uncharted waters. We will defeat the effects of coronavirus as a unified country and continue delivering our habitat conservation mission at an even higher level than before. Again, please visit https://PheasantsForever.org/Renew for membership renewal. We need your help!

Habitat Programs for Landowners

As we all know, private land represents most of the land across Minnesota and is critical for pheasants along with other species. The general hunter expects public land to produce all the birds, but public land represents a small fraction of land, so the surrounding private land is key to the production of more pheasants. The voluntary Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) that is available for private landowners targeting marginal acres, is essential for providing habitat to pheasants.

Some of these CRP programs include:

With that being said, along with the two new WMA projects, Brown county had a great year adding new habitat through the Conservation Reserve Program. In 2019, the continuous sign-up provided approximately 1,008 acres of habitat and the general sign-up added 2,918 acres. The Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program added almost 150 acres of permanently protected land. Without these acres of voluntary conservation, Brown County would not be a hotspot for hunters in the state of Minnesota. Thank you Landowners!

Along with the environmental quality incentive program (EQIP) and the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP), there were a few new voluntary conservation programs this year. The first being the Soil Health and Income Protection Program (SHIPP), https://www.fsa.usda.gov/Assets/USDA-FSA-Public/usdafiles/FactSheets/fsa-shipp-factsheet.pdf. The second new program was through Pheasants Forever and was the Soil health and Habitat Program (SHHP), https://www.pheasantsforever.org/Newsroom/2020-April/Applications-Now-Accepted-for-Soil-Health-and-Habitat-Program-in-Prairie-Pothole-Region.aspx.

If you need assistance in any of the potential habitat land programs you may contact directly our Farm Biologist – Luke Zilverberg. You can reach him at his mobile: (612) 865-9980 or Email: lzilverberg@pheasantsforever.org.

Again, we want to thank all our members and volunteers who do so much to help in the Brown County Pheasants Forever (PF) mission.

Thanks, Dan Braulick, President Brown County Pheasants Forever.
