Presidents Report

Hello and happy Spring from the (New) Brown County Pheasants Forever President!  For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Steve Eckstein and I have recently taken over President duties from Tim Kraskey.   I’ve been active on our chapter board for the past 9 years as Treasurer.  However, I’ve been a part of Brown County Pheasants Forever since I was allowed to follow my dad to the banquet about 30 years ago.  I have fond memories of the banquets held at the Orchid Inn growing up and being invited to walk along on hunts with many of the past board members before I could even carry a gun.  It was those early hunting trips which likely grew my love for the outdoors and awareness of the importance of conservation.

Over the past few years, I’ve attended both the State and National conventions where I witnessed first hand the passion that other Pheasants Forever employees and volunteers had for the organization.  This really rubbed off on me and got me fired up to do my part for our local chapter to keep the mission of the organization strong.

Keeping the tradition and mission of Pheasants Forever takes a solid core group of people on our local board.  We’ve been lucky to have a dedicated group of 6 to 10 people involved with the Brown County board over the past few years.  However, we are always looking for more help and new volunteers, which is no easy task.  In fact, getting more local people involved with volunteering with our local events is going to be one of my main goals going forward.   I think I can speak for all the current and past board members and volunteers when I say that being a part of a group like this has led to new friendships and business partnerships that I would have missed out on if I was not involved.  So please, if you have any interest at all in helping out in any way possible, please reach out as we’d love to have you!

Every 10 years or so we tend to have a ‘turn-over’ on the board as some members have put in their time and want to step away a bit while others have been recruited to fill their roles.  I’d like to give a shout out to Tim Kraskey, Dave Huhn, Danny Braulick, and Jeremy Berg who have helped keep the chapter running for the past 10 years.  That said, I’d like to thank our current board members for stepping up and accepting new roles on our board as follows:

  • President: Steve Eckstein
  • Vice President: Tim Kraskey
  • Treasurer: Rachel Cunningham
  • Banquet Chair: Tim Kraskey
  • Secretary: Bryan Peterson
  • Sponsorships: All Board Members, led by Danny Braulick
  • Marketing Chair: Tim Kraskey
  • E3 (Expand, Educate and Engage) Chair: Ben Cunningham
  • Habitat Chair: Brandon Kral
  • Farm Bill Biologist: Reva Ecker

Our up coming Habitat Day is being held Saturday May 10th. Come get your hands dirty and help work on our public lands. More details on this event are below.

2025 Banquet Overview
Thanks to all who attended our 2025 Brown County Pheasants Forever Banquet & Family Fun Night, held at the Sleepy Eye Event Center on March 22nd.  As always, we had a nice turnout for the event of about 270 people (down from 320 in 2024).   From what we gathered, everyone had a good time and we made some money to use locally to help support youth shooting and outdoor activities, local trap and sportsmans clubs, local field biologists, land acquisitions, and voices for conservation in our government.

Huge shout out to the many sponsors that helped make the night possible with donations of prizes for our games and raffles and monetary donations. Without all your generosity, we wouldn’t be able to come out ahead putting on an event like that.

Again, mark your calendars for the 2026 BCPF Annual Banquet to be held March 21, 2026, at the Sleepy Eye Event Center and we hope to see you there.
Habitat Report
This years habit day will take place on May 10th as part of our Adopt-a-WMA activities. This is a free event and the chapter will be providing lunch for all participants.

We’ll be working with local DNR officials to post new property marking signs, clean up parking areas, remove barb wire, and remove invasive trees on certain properties.  Depending on attendance, we generally split into a couple groups and work on different properties followed by a light lunch and social gathering.   We are always looking for more volunteers and have tried to stress involvement with youth from local trap teams and FFA clubs at these events.  If you are interested in attending and helping, please sign up at the following link to help us plan for numbers: Click Here to Register for Habitat Day 2025
Nicollet Conservation Club Youth Day
The Nicollet Conservation Club (NCC) Youth Day is tentatively set for July 19th at the NCC facilities. This event is driven by our friends at Nicollet County Pheasants Forever. This is a great youth event that we’ve been a part of for almost 10 years. We have had over 200 future hunters and conservationists attend. This is by far one of the best regional events in our area. If you have not been to one, we encourage all kids between about 7-13 to come out and attend next year. Mark your calendar and save the date.

Membership
The monies we receive through donations, fund raising, and membership are critical to us enhancing or purchasing lands for all the public to enjoy. We encourage everyone to renew their membership to Pheasants Forever or upgrade to a Lifetime membership.

Pheasants Forever is the only national organization with a model of chapters keeping 100% of the funds they raise. While belonging to a larger national organization that has a voice on federal and state conservation policies, chapters are tasked with finding projects for their funds. Minnesota takes full advantage of this model using funds raised for projects locally as well as other areas in the state of Minnesota.
